Ernst Otto von der Malsburg 1786. június 23-án Hanauban született. Marburgban végezte tanulmányait, majd hesseni követ volt Drezdában. Tieck, Loeben és a Grimm testvérek barátja, Calderón és Lope de Vega ihletett fordítója; 1814. szeptember 24-én halt meg Eschenbergben.
