Křesadlo, Jan: Rondel o nočním chodci

Portre of Křesadlo, Jan

Rondel o nočním chodci (Czech)

Jde nocí, která pelichá
tvář skrytu v kápi temnoty,
noc si ho souká do břicha
zahnědlé, teskné samoty.

Neznámé nese trampoty
nocí, jež ani nedýchá,
žluč zastřeného kalicha,
tvář skrytu v kápi temnoty.

Ó, okovaná distycha !
Železo noční mrákoty !
Báseň, již píšeš samo ty,
dunění kroků do ticha
noci, jíž chodec pospíchá,
tvář skrytu v kápi temnoty.

The Night Wanderer Rondel (English)

He walks within night’s moulting coat,
his face is hid in darkness’ cape
drawing him down its lonely throat
yearning, see night’s burnt umber gape.

Bearing his obscure troubles’ shape
through breathless night, in bile he floats
making the covered chalice bloat
his face is hid in darkness’ cape.

Hark to the armoured couplet’s note !
The steel of darkness’ fainting scrape !
Soloist, metered verse you ape
footsteps that thud, as though they wrote
hastening to cross night’s silent moat,
his face is hid in darkness’ cape.
