Eich, Günter: The Man in the Blue Smock (Der Mann in der blauen Jacke in English)

Portre of Eich, Günter

Der Mann in der blauen Jacke geht heimwärts;
seine Hacke, die er geschultert hat,
gleicht in der sinkenden Dämmerung einem Gewehr.

The Man in the Blue Smock (English)

The man in the blue smock,
going home, his hoe on his shoulder –
I see him behind the garden fence.

Thus they went at nightfall in Canaan,
thus they go home from Myranmar’s rice paddies,
Mecklenburg’s vast potato fields,
from the vineyards of Burgundy and the Californian orchards.

When the lamp lights up behind clouded panes,
I start envying them their bliss that I don’t have to share,
with the smoldering hearth, with children’s wasp, with modesty.

The man in the blue smock on his way home:
the hoe he is carrying on his shoulder
looks, as dusk is falling, like a gun.
