Ringelnatz, Joachim: The Guest Book (Stammbuchvers in English)

Portre of Ringelnatz, Joachim

Back to the translator

Stammbuchvers (German)

So – an ein Stammbuch hingezerrt –
Hat man Verdruß.
Man fühlt sich ins Klosett gesperrt,
Obwohl man gar nicht muß.

Denn mancher Gast will weitergehn
Und will nichts stehenlassen
Und seine Klexe ungesehn
Nur werfen, wo sie passen.

The Guest Book (English)

Dragged to a Guest Book sans pardon

You are non-plussed

You feel locked up into the john

Needlessly. You feel disgust.

For many guests in passing by

Want not to leave their writ

And throw their ink dabs, on the sly

Unseen, where they may fit.
