Sachs, Nelly: [Aber die Sonnenblume]

Portre of Sachs, Nelly

[Aber die Sonnenblume] (German)

Aber die Sonnenblume
entzündend die Wände
hebt vom Boden
die mit der Seele reden
im Dunkeln

schon Fackeln für eine andere Welt
mit Haaren wachsend bis über den Tod -

Und draussen Finkenschlag
und die Zeit in der Glorie gehend
farbig
und die Blume wachsend
dem Menschen ans Herz

Böses reift in die Kelter
schwarze Traube-verrufene -
schon gepresst zum Wein -

[But the sunflower] (English)

But the sunflower
igniting the wall
hoisting from deepest rock
the speech of souls
in the dark

already torching for another world
hair growing beyond death -

and in the open field the finch’s song
and the hours marching in glory
chromatic
and the flowers waxing
to human hearts.

Evil ripens into caskets
black grapes-defiled -
even now pressed into wine -
