Wiens, Paul: Stoffwechsel

Portre of Wiens, Paul

Stoffwechsel (German)

Hironymus Bosch

Ich öffne das buch. Ich betrete ein haus.
Dort wird einer geboren: ich. Aber
ich öffne ein fenster und klettre hinaus.
Auf der strasse am kandelaber
hängt einer, schwarzhäutig, streckt
seine zunge heraus: ich. Indessen
verlass ich die stadt. Im kornfeld neckt
einer nackt eine nackte: ich. Sie fressen
eines das andre - abendmahl. Doch
ich steh schon am kreuzweg. Dort stritten
zwei.

Metabolism (English)

Hieronymus Bosch

I open the book. I enter a house.
Someone is being born there: me. But
i open a window and climb out.
In the street from a chandelier
someone is hanging, black skinned, sticks
his tongue out: me. Meanwhile
i leave the city. In a rye field one naked person
teases another: me. They eat
one another-supper. But
i already stand at the crossroads. There two
were arguing. Now the one has a red hole
in his stomach and screams: me. The other, in the middle
of the cathedral atop a column. castrates himself: me.
I lower my eyes. Beneath me shimmers
the center of the earth. Somebody sleeps there: me.
Someone presses the button there and whimpers:
me. I turn away, i step onto the train.
We roll through nights and play
chess: i versus me. Out there, among the sparks,
someone is aglow: me. Fall, without aiming,
find thc white sheet of paper: me. Burn out.
Jump fresh out of the fire, anointed and chosen:
a book is opened, a house entered,
someone is being born there ... I, i, i, i ...
