Κάποτε, μιὰ τυχαία κι ἐντελῶς ἀσήμαντη λέξη
προσδίδει μιὰ ἀπροσδόκητη σημασία στὸ ποίημα,
ὅπως π.χ. στὸ ἐγκαταλειμμένο ὑπόγειο, ὅπου
κανεὶς δὲν κατεβαίνει ἀπὸ καιρό, τὸ μεγάλο, ἄδειο κιοῦπι.
στὸ σκοτεινό του χεῖλος περπατάει χωρὶς νόημα μιὰ ἀράχνη,
(χωρὶς νόημα γιὰ σένα, μὰ ἴσως ὄχι γιὰ κείνην).

The Spider (English)

Sometimes, a chance and entirely meaningless word
lends an unexpected meaning to the poem,
as for example in the abandoned basement, where
no one has gone down for a long time, on the dark clay rim
of the large empty jar, a spider walks aimlessly
(aimless to you, but perhaps not to her).
