Aiken, Conrad: Dead Leaf in May

Portre of Aiken, Conrad

Dead Leaf in May (English)

One skeleton-leaf, white-ribbed, a last year's leaf,
Skipped in a paltry gust, whizzed from the dust
Leapt the small dusty puddle; and sailing then
Merrily in the sunlight, lodged itself
Between two blossoms in a hawthorn tree.
That was the moment: and the world was changed.
With that insane gay skeleton of a leaf
A world of dead worlds flew to hawthorn trees,
Lodged in the green forks, rattled, rattled their ribs
(As loudly as a dead leaf’s ribs can rattle)
Blithely, among bees and blossoms. I cursed,
I shook my stick, dislodged it. To what end?
Its ribs, and all the ribs of all dead worlds,
Would house them now forever as death should:
Cheek by jowl with May.

That was the moment: and my brain flew open
Like a ripe bunting pod. The seed sprang out
And I was withered, and had given all.
Ripeness at top means rottenness beneath:
The brain divulging seed, the heart is empty:
The little blood goes through it like quicksilver:
The hand is leather, and the world is lost.
Human, who trudge the road from Here to There:
Lock the dry oak-leaf’s flimsy skeleton
In auricle or ventricle; sail it
Like a gay ship down red Aorta's flood.
Be the paired blossoms with dead ribs between.
Thirst in the There, that you may drink the Here.

Holt levél májusban (Hungarian)

Levél-csontváz, tavalyról, szürke bordás,
Álnok szélrohammal zizzent elő
A porból, egy pocsolyán átszökött,
S már vígan szállt a napfénybe, s tanyát vert
Két virág közt egy galagonyafán.
Egy pillanat, s a világ megváltozott.
Ezzel-az eszelős-víg váz-levéllel
Világnyi holt világ röppent a fákra,
S fosztott bordáit csörgette a zöldben
(Ahogy csak holt levél-borda zöröghet)
Derűsen, méh s virágközt. Átkozódtam,
Botom ráztam, s lepiszkáltam. Mivégre?
Bordája, s mind a holt világoké,
Tudtam már, mindörökre ott marad
Május virágai között.

Egy pillanat, és agyam felrepedt,
Mint egy érett becő. A mag kipattant,
És elfonnyadtam, kiürültem én.
Túlérettség mögött a rothadás:
Az agy magot hint szét, a szív üres lesz,
Higanyként vándorol rajt át a vér,
Hártyás a kéz, és veszve a világ.
Ember, ki Innen utat törsz Oda,
Zárd a holt tölgylevelet, törékeny vázát
Pitvarba. vagy kamrába, küldd alá
Az Aortán át mint vidám vitorlást.
Légy virág-pár holt bordákkal közölve,
Szomjazz az Ottban, hogy ihasd az Ittet.
