Ammons, A. R.: Mountain Talk

Portre of Ammons, A. R.

Mountain Talk (English)

I was going along a dusty highroad
when the mountain
across the way
turned me to its silence:
oh I said how come
I don't know your
massive symmetry and rest:
nevertheless, said the mountain,
would you want
to be
lodged here with
a changeless prospect, risen
to an unalterable view:
so I went on
counting my numberless fingers.

Hegyi beszéd (Hungarian)

Végigmentem a poros hegyi úton
s a hegy
keresztezve utamat
saját csöndjéhez térített:
ó hogyan is jöhettem hozzád
aki nem ismerem
szilárd szimmetriád s nyugalmad:
mindazonáltal, mondta a hegy,
ha akarsz
lakhatsz
együtt
e változatlan kilátással, fölemelkedhetsz
ehhez az átalakíthatatlan látványhoz:
továbbmentem
számolva megszámolhatatlan ujjaim
