Auden, W. H.: Barcarolle

Portre of Auden, W. H.

Barcarolle (English)

Gentle, little boat

Across the ocean float,

The crystal waves dividing;

The sun in the west

Is going to rest:

Glide, glide, glide,

Towards the Islands of the Blest.

Orchards greenly grace

that undisturbed place,

the weary soul recalling

to slumber and dream,

while many a stream

falls, falls, falls,

descanting on a child-like theme.

Lion, lamb and deer,

untouched by greed or fear

about the woods are straying:

and quietly now

the blossoming bough

sways, sways, sways

above the fair unclouded brow.

From The Rake’s Progress, Act III, Lullaby.

Barcarola (Hungarian)

Lágyan kis ladik,

szeld kristályhabjait

hullámzó tengerárnak;

  míg a napra éj

  alkonypírja kél,

     szállj, szállj, szállj,

és boldogság-szigetre érj.

Zöld fák, dús gyümölcs,

bántatlan álmu föld

dajkál, ha szíved bágyad,

  ringat, nyugtot ád,

  halld a víz szavát:

     zsong, zsong, zsong,

gyermeki dalt dúdol tovább.

Bárány, párduc, őz,

békülten kergetőz

az erdőn minden állat,

  rügy bimbója lám,

  szirmot hajt korán,

     ring, ring, ring,

felhőtlen égbolt hajlatán.
