Auden, W. H.: Elégia J. F. K. felett (Elegy for J. F. K. in Hungarian)

Portre of Auden, W. H.

Elegy for J. F. K. (English)

When a just man dies,
Lamentation and praise,
Sorrow and joy, are one.

Why then, why there,
Why thus, we cry, did he die?
The heavens are silent.

What he was, he was:
What he is fated to become
Depends on us

Remembering his death,
How we choose to live
Will decide its meaning.

When a just man dies,
Lamentation and praise,
Sorrow and joy, are one.

Elégia J. F. K. felett (Hungarian)

Ha igaz ember hal meg,
jajgatás és dicséret,
bánat és öröm: egy.

Mért most, mért ott,
mért így, kiáltunk, halt meg ő?
hallgatnak az egek.

Az volt, ami volt:
amivé válik, az
rajtunk múlik.

Holtát nem feledőn,
mint alakítjuk a létünk:
súlyát ez dönti el.

Ha igaz ember hal meg,
jajgatás és dicséret,
bánat és öröm: egy.
