Avison, Margaret: Janitor Working on Threshold

Portre of Avison, Margaret

Janitor Working on Threshold (English)

Boot-soles and overalled haunches to the street,
kneeling -
from the ivy-failing, darkly-bright
day-ceiling,
and from cool stone, green court inside -
prising some broken stripping loose, and all in
slow skill, plain sight,
working, till no one need be afraid of falling -

this street
and door in the final stilling
of all (of the one at the threshold with the rest)
recall the less than the least,
John, and the wings, and healing.

A házmester dolgozik a küszöbön (Hungarian)

Utcára néz a csizmatalpa, overallos hátsófele,
térdepel -
lehajolva a repkény-hullású, sötét-világos
nap-mennyezet -
a zöld belsejű udvar és a hűvös kő előtt,
dolgozik, mindenben lassú tudás, nyugodt igyekezet,
lefeszíti, ahol a küszöb eltörött,
hogy senki se féljen: elesik -

ez az utca
és ajtó, mindenek
végső állóképén (ő a küszöbön és a többi)
felidézi a paránynál parányabbakat,
Jánost, a gyógyulást s a szárnyakat.
