Avison, Margaret: We the Poor Who Are Always With Us

Portre of Avison, Margaret

We the Poor Who Are Always With Us (English)

The cumbering hungry
and the uncaring ill
become too many
try as we will.

Try on and on, still?
In fury, fly
out, smash shards? (And quail
at tomorrow's new supply,
and fail anew to find and smash the why?)

It is not hopeless.
One can crawling move
too there, still free to love
past use, where none survive.

And there is reason in
the hope that then can shine
when other hope is none.

Mi, a szegények, akik mindig velünk vannak (Hungarian)

A nyűgös éhező,
gondozatlan beteg
úgyis nyakunkra nő,
kár az igyekezet.

Igyekezzünk azért?
Dühöngve futsz
el, dúlsz-fúlsz (s hova jutsz,
a holnapi új szállítmány előtt,
csüggedsz, miértet keresel, hogy összetörd?)

Nem reménytelen.
Élni a földön kúszva
is lehet, haszontalan,
haszon nélkül szeretni is,
ahol más képtelen.

S jogos az a remény is,
ami akkor ragyog,
ha más remény kifogy.
