Bateson, Thomas: Húsz éves… (Madrigal CCXLVI in Hungarian)

Portre of Bateson, Thomas

Back to the translator

Madrigal CCXLVI (English)

One woman scarce of twenty,

But hath of tears great plenty;

Which they pour out like fountains,

That run down from the mountains:

Yet all is but beguiling,

Their tears and eke their smiling.

I’ll therefore never trust them,

Since Nature hath so curst them;

That they can weep in smiling,

Poor fools thereby beguiling.

Húsz éves… (Hungarian)

Húsz éves se múlt a hölgy el,

szeme tele mégis könnyel:

szívesebben hömpölyögne,

mint a patak le a völgybe.

De egyformán csábitóak:

ha sírnak, ha mosolyognak.

Engem hölgy már meg nem hatna:

mert úgy vannak megalkotva,

hogy nevetve könnyezgetnek.

Bolondok, kik lépre mennek!
