Browning, Robert: Éjjeli találkozó (Meeting at Night in Hungarian)

Portre of Browning, Robert
Portre of Kosztolányi Dezső

Back to the translator

Meeting at Night (English)

I

The grey sea and the long black land;

And the yellow half-moon large and low;

And the startled little waves that leap

In fiery ringlets from their sleep,

As I gain the cove with pushing prow,

And quench its speed in the slushy sand.

II

Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;

Three fields to cross till a farm appears;

A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch

And blue spurt of a lighted match,

And a voice less loud, thro’ its joys and fears,

Than the two hearts beating each to each!

Éjjeli találkozó (Hungarian)

I

Most szürke víz, fekete táj;

pufók, sárgás félhold alant;

riad a hab, a könnyű, fürge,

fel-felszökik tüzes gyűrűkbe,

aztán hajómat, a hajléktalant

fövény köti, az este fáj.

II

Langyos vízszag és enyhe csönd.

Távol mezőn int egy tanya:

kopogás, karc, a gyufa sercen,

kék villanás a másik percben.

A félelemtől lágy meleg szava,

és végre két szív összedöng.
