Chesterton, Gilbert Keith: A szamár (The Donkey in Hungarian)

The Donkey (English)

When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born.

Whit monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings,
The devil’s walking parody
On all four-footed things.

The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.

Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet!

A szamár (Hungarian)

Mikor az erdő járt, a hal
repült, a vad sövény
fügét hajtott s vérzett a hold,
akkor születtem én.

Rikoltva, torz fejjel, fülem
csúf szárnyként röpködött:
ördög torzképe lettem a
négylábuak között.

Kit kivetett rongyként a föld
s egy ősi akarat,
gyötörj, gyalázz: néma vagyok,
megőrzöm titkomat.

Ostobák! Jutott nékem is
egy nap, vad s drága nap:
hangok lengtek fülem körül
s pálmák lábam alatt.
