Crane, Hart: Moment Fugue

Portre of Crane, Hart

Moment Fugue (English)

The syphilitic selling violets calmly

      and daisies

By the subway news-stand knows

                        how hyacinths

This April morning offers

      hurriedly

In bunches sorted freshly –

                    and bestows

On every purchaser

                               (of heaven perhaps)

His eyes –

                 like crutches hurtled against glass

Fall mute and sudden (dealing change

      for lillies)

Beyond the roses that no flesh can pass.

Pillanat-fúga (Hungarian)

A szifiliszes, ki ibolyát árul nyugodtan

 és százszorszépet

A metrónál az újságos mellett, tudja,

   hogy a jácintok

Ezen az áprilisi reggelen mily sietve

 kínálkoznak

Friss csokrokba válogatva –

   Hát nyújtja is

Mindegyik vásárló felé

(mint a mennyben talán),

Szemei –

 akár üveglapnak csapódó mankók,

Hirtelen fordulnak le s némán (aprót kutatva

a liliomokhoz),

A rózsákon túlra hova hús nem juthat el.
