Daniel, Samuel: Ha kondor fürtöd lepi téli hó (Delia XLII: When Winter Snows in Hungarian)

Portre of Daniel, Samuel
Portre of Somlyó György

Back to the translator

Delia XLII: When Winter Snows (English)

When Winter snows upon thy golden hairs,

And frost of age hath nipt thy flowers near,

When dark shall seem thy day that never clears,

And all lies wither'd that was held so dear,

Then take this picture which I here present thee,

Limn'd with a pencil not all unworthy:

Here see the gifts that God and Nature lent thee;

Here read thy self, and what I suffer'd for thee.

This may remain thy lasting monument,

Which happily posterity may cherish;

These colors with thy fading are not spent;

These may remain, when thou and I shall perish.

If they remain, then thou shalt live thereby;

They will remain, and so thou canst not die.

Ha kondor fürtöd lepi téli hó (Hungarian)

Ha kondor fürtöd lepi téli hó

s szépséged hamvát megcsípte a fagy,

ha ködös napod sosem tisztuló

s minden drága hazugság odahagy,

vedd akkor e képet, mit most ajánlok,

nem utolsó a toll, amely színezte;

lásd benn, mivel a Természet megáldott,

s olvasd, hogy milyen kint döftél szívembe.

Ez megmarad örök emlékműved,

bámulatul a kései koroknak;

e színek nem fakulnak el veled,

s ha te meg én elvesztünk, élni fognak.

Ha él e mű, te is élsz általa.

S mert élni fog, nem halhatsz meg soha.
