Davie, Donald: Bolyai geometriája (Bolyai, the Geometer in Hungarian)

Portre of Davie, Donald

Bolyai, the Geometer (English)

Arthur Allan, when he lived
In rooms beneats my rooms in Trinity,
Thought he had made a breakthrough that would turn
Mathematics inside out again,

As once geometry was spun around
Beacuse the non-Euclidean emerged
Not out of nature, out of nothing extant
But simply as imaginable. Shade,

A flap of blackness folded back upon
Pillar and pediment that afternoon
Encroached upon the chapel portico
And there a wing whirled, flushing. So I thought,

This turning inside-out is not so hard:
One looks across Front Square and there it is,
A wing that whirls white undersides, sustained
By what endangers it, the press of air.

And though his torque was different, not in nature,
And though my science is as pure as his,
Knowing no revolution more profound
Than that from black or white to white on black

(As though a shutter shot across the mind
One sees the lately formless as most formal,
The stanza most a unit when
Open at both ends, all transition) still

How pure is mathematics? Not enough
For Farkas Bolyai: ’Not geometry
Is altogether pure. This is a wound
Large and perpetual upon my soul.’

So with poetics: never a revolution
But has its mould. Look, in the overturning
Approaching comber, rolling inside out,
A roof of cream moves back though a mounting wall.

Bolyai geometriája (Hungarian)

Arthur Allen, amikor mellettem lakott
A Trinity kollégiumban,
Azt hitte, olyan áttörést vitt végbe,
Ami kifordítja megint a matematikát,

Vetett a kápolna portikuszára,
És ott egy szárny örvénylett villogva. Azt hittem tehát,

E kifordítás nem is oly nehéz:
Az ember átnéz a Főtéren, s máris ott van
Egy szárny, mely fehér alszínt örvénylik, s az tartja fenn,
Ami kétessé teszi, a légnyomás.

Igazán épp akkor egység a versszak,
Ha eleje, vége nyitott átkötés) – de

Mennyire tiszta a matematika? Nem eléggé
Bolyai Farkasnak: „Nem tökéletes
Tiszta a geometria sem. Nagy és
Örökös seb ez a lelkemen."

Így poétikában is: nincs forradalom
Öntőforma nélkül. Nézd, a közelgő
Gerebenezőgépen, kifordulóban,
Vajsárga felszín hátrál növekvő falon át.
