Eliot, T. S.: La Figlia Che Piange

Portre of Eliot, T. S.

La Figlia Che Piange (English)

O quam te memorem Virgo ...*

Stand on the highest pavement of the stair--

Lean on a garden urn--

Weave, weave the sunlight in your hair--

Clasp your flowers to you with a pained surprise--

Fling them to the ground and turn

With a fugitive resentment in your eyes:

But weave, weave the sunlight in your hair.

So I would have had him leave,

So I would have had her stand and grieve,

So he would have left

As the soul leaves the body torn and bruised,

As the mind deserts the body it has used.

I should find

Some way incomparably light and deft,

Some way we both should understand,

Simple and faithless as a smile and shake of the hand.

She turned away, but with the autumn weather

Compelled my imagination many days,

Many days and many hours:

Her hair over her arms and her arms full of flowers.

And I wonder how they should have been together!

I should have lost a gesture and a pose.

Sometimes these cogitations still amaze

The troubled midnight and the noon's repose.

La figlia che piange (Hungarian)

O quam te memorem Virgo...*

Állj meg a lépcső legfelső kövén

Kerti urnának könyökölve –

Kapjon belé hajadba szőke fény –

Virágaid öleld át megriadva –

Szeszélyesen dobáld le mind a földre,

Míg fodrot ver lelked tündéri habja

S hajadban megszikráz a szőke fény.

Bár hagyta volna így szerelmese

S ő némán súgná: meghalt a mese,

De még figyelné: vissza nem les-e?

Bárcsak így hagyta volna ott,

Mint lélek hagyja el ütött-kopott

Testét, melyben már több tűz nem lobogl

De mért is váltak el: ne kérdd,

Válásra könnyű mentséget találni,

Amelyet mindkét fél megért,

Legyen bár könnye óceánnyi –

Mentséget, mely kiment, nem tétováz,

S egyszerű, mint mosoly, vagy kézfogás.

És elfordult a lány, de még süket,

Zord őszidőn sokszor libegve lép ki

A ködből és sötét varázst lehel.

Karját lehúzza dús virág-teher...

Elképzelem, hogy vágyta őt a férfi –

Színezgetem ölelkezésüket

De elsikkad egy-egy póz, lendület.

Gond-glóriás arcuk hányszor hajol rám

Káprázó délben s dúlt éjféli órán!

*„Ámde kinek tiszteljünk szűz téged…”
