Emerson, Ralph Waldo: Csak az isteni kegyelemnek köszönhetem (Grace in Hungarian)

Portre of Emerson, Ralph Waldo
Portre of Israel Efraim

Back to the translator

Grace (English)

How much, preventing God, how much I owe
To the defences thou hast round me set;
Example, custom, fear, occasion slow,-
These scorned bondmen were my parapet.
I dare not peep over this parapet
To gauge with glance the roaring gulf below,
The depths of sin to which I had descended,
Had not these me against myself defended.

Csak az isteni kegyelemnek köszönhetem (Hungarian)

Óvó Isten, csupa jóakaróm
Falad, rácsod köröttem odakint;
Példa, szokás, félsz, késő alkalom, –
Védőbástyám e gúnyolt szolga mind.
Fölötte szemem le nem is tekint,
A mélységet felmérni sem tudom,
A bűnét, mely biztosan sírba hantol,
Ha e korlát nem véd meg önmagamtól.
