Enright, D. J.: Kocsma (Public Bar in Hungarian)

Public Bar (English)

Why are the faces here so lined?
Have they ever borne the pains of
Poetry? Or the strains of music.
Their hollow eyes have never searched a
Sombre canvas.

Their souls not scorched like ours
By burning issues. Or their cheeks
Trenched by the tears of things. No
Complex loves or losses wrung their hearts
Like ours.

Why do their faces look like this,
Carved through centuries, whole histories
Etched in their skin? Like works of art
Themselves. How did they steal
Our faces?

Kocsma (Hungarian)

Mi ez itt, ez a sok barázdás arc?
Hát ismerték ezek a költészet
Kínját? Vagy a zene feszültségét.
Beesett szemük sose vergődött
Komor vásznakon.

Lelkük nem perzselték, mint a miénket,
Égető kérdések. Orcájuk nem szántották
A dolgok könnyei. Bonyolult szeretet
S veszteség a szívüket nem gyötörte,
Mint a miénket.

Hát akkor miért ilyen az arcuk,
Századok faragása, egész történelmek
A bőrükbe edzve? Már magukban
Műalkotások. Hogy lopták el
Arcainkat?
