The Road Not Taken (English)

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Die verpasste Straße (German)

Zwei Straßen gingen ab im gelben Wald,

Und leider konnte ich nicht beide reisen,

Da ich nur einer war; ich stand noch lang

Und sah noch nach, so weit es ging, der einen

Bis sie im Unterholz verschwand;

 

Und nahm die andre, grad so schön gelegen,

Die vielleicht einen bessern Weg versprach,

Denn grasbewachsen kam sie mir entgegen;

Jedoch, so weit es den Verkehr betraf,

So schienen beide gleichsam ausgetreten,

 

An jenem Morgen lagen beide da

Mit frischen Blättern, noch nicht schwarz getreten.

Hob mir die eine auf für'n andern Tag!

Doch wusste ich, wie's meist so geht mit Wegen,

Ob ich je wiederkäm, war zweifelhaft.

 

Es könnte sein, dass ich dies seufzend sag,

Wenn Jahre und Jahrzehnte fortgeschritten:

Zwei Straßen gingen ab im Wald, und da –

Wählt' ich jene, die nicht oft beschritten,

Und das hat allen Unterschied gemacht.
