Habington, William: Against Them Who Lay Unchastity to the Sex of Women

Portre of Habington, William

Against Them Who Lay Unchastity to the Sex of Women (English)

They meet with but unwholesome springs

And summers which infectious are,

They hear but when the mermaid sings,

And only see the falling star,

Who ever dare

Affirm no woman chaste and fair.

Go cure your fevers, and you 'll say

The dog-days scorch not all the year;

In copper mines no longer stay

But travel to the west and there

The right ones see,

And grant all gold 's not alchemy.

What madman 'cause the glow-worm's flame

Is cold, swears there 's no warmth in fire ?

'Cause some make forfeit of their name

And slave themselves to man's desire,

Shall the sex, free

From guilt, damned to bondage be ?

Nor grieve, Castara, though 't were frail,

Thy virtue then would brighter shine,

When thy example should prevail

And every woman's faith be thine :

And were there none,

'T is majesty to rule alone.

Azok ellen, akik tisztátalansággal vádolják a női nemet (Hungarian)

Tavasz ha jön, nekik ragály,

a nyár dögvésznek fészke csak.

Szemükben hullócsillag-ár,

szirén-dal, mást se hallanak:

mind vakmerő,

ki esküszik, nincs tiszta nő.

Lohadjon lázatok! Lobog

a nyár s kihamvad sebtiben.

Rézbánya ez; induljatok

nyugatra, ott arany terem.

Bár csillogó,

nem szemfényvesztés mind a jó.

Mécsbogár: fénye mint a jég,

ezért nem éget tán a tűz?

Mert sok nő játssza el nevét

és szolgaként hím-vágyat űz,

mért lenne rab,

aki a vétektől szabad?

Ne sírj, Castara, virtusod

törékeny bár, de fényesen

ragyog, ha példád győzni fog

és minden asszony hű leszen;

s ha egy sem az,

magad leszel dicső s igaz.
