Hardy, Thomas: Az ablakon át (Outside the Window in Hungarian)

Portre of Hardy, Thomas
Portre of Tótfalusi István

Back to the translator

Outside the Window (English)

'My stick!' he says, and turns in the lane
To the house just left, whence a vixen voice
Comes out with the firelight through the pane,
And he sees within that the girl of his choice
Stands rating her mother with eyes aglare
For something said while he was there.

'At last I behold her soul undraped!'
Thinks the man who had loved her more than himself;
'My God!--tis but narrowly I have escaped.--
My precious porcelain proves it delf.'
His face has reddened like one ashamed,
And he steels off, leaving his stick unclaimed.

Az ablakon át (Hungarian)

 „Botom!” s már indul vissza a házhoz,
hol épp most járt, de hallga, bent
egy fúria hangja - ő kiáltoz,
a lány, kit imád, a drága, a szent,
szikrázó szemmel szidja az anyját,
hogy mit beszélt, mikor ő odabent járt.

„Most látom a lelkét leplezetlen”
szól, ki úgy imádta a lányt,
„Úristen! épp hogy megmenekedtem -
a porcelán, lám, durva fajánsz!”
Arcát a szégyen pírja befutja,
s eloson, marad emlékül - a botja.
