Herrick, Robert: Mért siettek úgy, nárciszok? (To Daffodils in Hungarian)

Portre of Herrick, Robert
Portre of Szabó Lőrinc

Back to the translator

To Daffodils (English)

Fair daffodils, we weep to see

  You haste away so soon;

As yet the early-rising sun

  Has not attain'd his noon.

        Stay, stay

    Until the hasting day

        Has run

    But to the evensong;

And, having pray'd together, we

    Will go with you along.

We have short time to stay, as you,

  We have as short a spring;

As quick a growth to meet decay,

  As you, or anything.

        We die

    As your hours do, and dry

        Away

    Like to the summer's rain;

Or as the pearls of morning's dew,

    Ne'er to be found again.

Mért siettek úgy, nárciszok? (Hungarian)

Mért siettek úgy, nárciszok,

sárga liliomok?

A nap korán indult, de még

zeniten sem ragyog!

Ha gyors,

akkor is vár a sors,

amíg

nem szól az estharang:

mondjunk közös búcsúimát

s födjön együtt a hant.

A mi útunk is gyors tavasz

s még gyorsabb pusztulás:

növünk, virulunk, hervadunk,

mint ti, vagy bárki más.

Ahogy

a ti gyors napotok

vagy a

friss harmat odavan:

mint a gyöngyös nyári eső,

eltűnünk nyomtalan.
