Hewett, Dorothy: Homecoming

Portre of Hewett, Dorothy

Homecoming (English)

I

Coming home - the airport filled with strangers,

the case too heavy to carry, the homosexual's kiss.

A deep breath on the gangway, then plunge in,

the panicky claustrophobia, hermetically sealed.

The brutal innocence of noses, pressed to glass,

'Take me, take me.'

An empty city, too small to be remembered.

The garden's greened with rain and children's voices,

Outside the sleep-out window the maple's rainbow coloured

brown carnations, from the hospital visit, desolate in vases,

In bed, we touch again, strangers in flesh.

II

A month passes, the maple leaves turn redder,

a fire burns, I read the New Statesman

we drink black tea in the garden

you type on the rustic table...

we wear clothes to bed.

There is a sense of permanence and comfort.

The Boeing 707 howls across our roof,

My naked body runs across the tarmac

into the dark ... out of the green garden

and the children coming home from school

         'Take me Take me.'

Hazatérés (Hungarian)

I

Hazaérkezem – a repülőtér idegenekkel teli,

a bőrönd túl nehéz, akár a melegek csókja.

Mély levegő a folyosón, majd fejest ugrom

a hermetikusan elzárt klausztrofóbiába.

Az ablaküveghez nyomott orrok brutális

ártatlansága: „Vigyél magaddal, vigyél magaddal!"

Üres város, túl kicsi, hogy emlékezzem rá.

A kert esőtől és gyerekhangoktól virul,

a télikerten túl szivárványszínű a juharfa,

a vázában kórházi látogatásból maradt,

megbarnult szegfűk, az ágyban idegenek érintése.

II

Eltelik egy hónap, a juharlevelek pirosodnak,

tűz ég, „Az új államférfi"-t olvasom,

fekete teát iszunk a kertben,

gépelsz a rusztikus asztalon...

ruhában fekszünk le aludni.

Minden kényelmet és állandóságot sugároz.

A Boeing 707-es elzúg a ház fölött,

meztelen testem átrohan a makadámúton

bele a sötétbe... ki a zöld kertből,

és a gyerekek megjönnek az iskolából

       „Vigyél el...vigyél el."
