Housman, A. E.: Az elefánt vagy a szokás hatalma (The Elephant or The Force of Habit in Hungarian)

Portre of Housman, A. E.
Portre of Gergely Ágnes

Back to the translator

The Elephant or The Force of Habit (English)

A tail behind, a trunk in front,
Complete the usual elephant.
The tail in front, the trunk behind,
Is what you very seldom find.

If you for specimens should hunt
With trunks behind and tails in front.
That hunt would occupy you long;
The force of habit is so strong.

Az elefánt vagy a szokás hatalma (Hungarian)

Hátul farok, fölül a hát:
ez a közismert elefánt.
Elöl farok, alul a hát:
ez elefántban ritkaság.

Alul a hát, elöl farok:
ha ezt a példányt akarod,
soká leszel vadászaton.
De hát a szokás hatalom.
