Johnston, George: Szabadban (Outdoors in Hungarian)

Portre of Johnston, George

Outdoors (English)

Everyone gone away
feasting but Nora, Mark
and me. Neither do we
stay put. It is getting dark

and on the horizon
the haze is grape-coloured;
an orange quarter moon,
under-ripe and pallid

lies in the murk down low;
the field ends are haunted.
I let myself go slow
while the two race ahead,

gleeful, inky leapers
in the warm gloom; I strain
to glimpse their dark capers
by the dusk of the moon.

Szabadban (Hungarian)

Mind vendégségbe ment,
csak Nora s Mark maradt
meg én. De mi se bent
ülünk. Jön a sötét,

a láthatárra folyt
a szőlő-színű köd;
narancsszín csonka hold,
éretlen, sápatag,

mély homályban pihen;
lidérces a rét töve.
Megyek kényelmesen,
s ők már futnak tova,

víg tintás szökdelők
langy sötétben; a lankadt
hold-derengés alig
mutatja, hol szaladnak.
