Jonson, Ben: Elég a dísz, a gála már (Simplex Munditiis in Hungarian)

Portre of Jonson, Ben
Portre of Mészöly Dezső

Back to the translator

Simplex Munditiis (English)

Still to be neat, still to be dressed,

As you were going to a feast;

Still to be powdered, still perfumed:

Lady, it is to be presumed,

Though art's hid causes are not found,

All is not sweet, all is not sound.

Give me a look, give me a face,

That makes simplicity a grace;

Robes loosely flowing, hair as free:

Such sweet neglect more taketh me

Than all the adulteries of art;

They strike mine eyes, but not my heart.

Elég a dísz, a gála már (Hungarian)

Elég a dísz, a gála már:

az járjon így, ki bálba jár!

Ki parfümös, ki púderes:

gyanús, hogy nem tökéletes;

hol kendőzés van – bár titok –,

az épség, szépség sántit ott!

Szebb úgy nekünk a női kép,

ha bája puszta frisseség.

A lenge köntös ejt rabul,

s a röpke haj, ha szertehull.

Ha csellel élsz csak szüntelen:

szemünkre hatsz, szivünkre nem.
