Larkin, Philip: Nothing to Be Said

Portre of Larkin, Philip

Nothing to Be Said (English)

For nations vague as weed,
For nomads among stones,
Small-statured cross-faced tribes
And cobble-close families
In mill-towns on dark mornings
Life is slow dying.

So are their separate ways
Of building, benediction,
Measuring love and money
Ways of slowly dying.
The day spent hunting pig
Or holding a garden-party,

Hours giving evidence
Or birth, advance
On death equally slowly.
And saying so to some
Means nothing; others it leaves
Nothing to be said.

Nem tudnak mit felelni (Hungarian)

A gyomként kóbor népnek,
Kövek közti nomádnak,
A kancsal, törpe törzsnek,
Gyárváros tompa reggelén
Földhöz ragadt családnak,
Az élet csak lassú halál.

Hasonképp minden útjuk:
Az épités, az áldás,
Pénz és szerelem-szerzés,
Lassú haldoklás módja mind;
Vadkanvadászat és
A garden party napja,

Tanuskodás, avagy
Szülés, egy végbe megy;
Visz lassan a halálhoz.
Ha erről szólsz, akad, kinek
Semmit se mond, mások pedig
Nem tudnak mit felelni rá.
