Lawrence, D. H.: Bánat (Sorrow in Hungarian)

Portre of Lawrence, D. H.
Portre of Tandori Dezső

Back to the translator

Sorrow (English)

Why does the thin grey strand

Floating up from the forgotten

Cigarette between my fingers,

Why does it trouble me?

Ah, you will understand;

When I carried my mother downstairs,

A few times only, at the beginning

Of her soft-foot malady,

I should find, for a reprimand

To my gaiety, a few long grey hairs

On the breast of my coat; and one by one

I let them float up the dark chimney.

Bánat (Hungarian)

Mért, hogy ha szürkén meglobog

egy vékony pászma az ujjaim közt

felejtett cigarettacsikken,

olyan szomorú leszek én?

Ó, tudom, érteni fogod:

amikor néhányszor levittem anyámat

a lépcsőn, még a lábát elgyengítő

betegség kezdetén,

szemrehányásként leltem ott

kabátomon – mert vidám lehettem!

pár hosszú szürke hajszálat; s figyeltem,

mint tűnnek a kémény sötét ölén.
