Layton, Irving: Ellenségek (Enemies in Hungarian)

Portre of Layton, Irving

Back to the translator

Enemies (English)

The young carpenter
  who works on his house
has no definition for me.

I am for him
   a book. A face in a book.
Finally a face.

The sunlight
  on the white paper
The sunlight on the easy

Summer chair
  is the same sunlight
which glints rosily

From his hammer.
  He is aware suddenly
of connections: I

Am embroiled
  in the echoing sound
of his implement

As it slides nails
  into the resistant wood
which later, later

Coffins will emerge
  as if by some monstrous
parturition. Is it any wonder

He so mislikes me
  seeing his handiwork
robed in black?

Seeing I shatter
  his artifact of space
with that which is

Forever dislodging
  the framework for
its own apprehension?

Over the wall
  of sound I see
his brutal grin of victory

Made incomplete
  by the white sunlit
paper I hold on my knee.

He has no metal
  gauge to take in
a man with a book

And yet his
  awkward shadow
falls on each page.

We are implicated,
  in each other's presence
by the sun, the third party

(Itself unimplicated)
  and only for a moment
reconciled to each other's

Necessary existence
  by the sight
of our neighbour's

Excited boy
  whom some God, I conjecture,
bounces for His joy.

Ellenségek (Hungarian)

A fiatal ács
  aki a házán dolgozik
nem tudja, minek tartson.

Csupán egy könyv
vagyok neki. Egy arc a könyvben.
Végül egy arc.

A napfény
  a fehér papíron
a napfény a könnyű

Kerti széken
  ugyanaz
ami rózsásan

A kalapácsról villan.
  Hirtelen észrevette
e kapcsolatot:

Belekeveredtem
  e szerszám
visszhangos csattogásába

Szögeket ver
  a tiltakozó fába
ahonnan aztán, aztán

Koporsó bukkan elő
  mint valami gyalázatos
szülésből. Csoda-e

Hogy ennyire utál engem
  tanúját gyászba fordult
keze munkájának?

Érzi, hogy
  tér-alkotását
szétrombolom azzal, ami

Minduntalan kificamítja
  e szerkezetet,
hogy megértesse magát

Látom a hangok
  fala fölött
győzelmes, durva vigyorát

Beteljesületlenné teszi
  a fehér, napsütötte papír
amit a térdemen tartok.

Nincs neki
  acél mértéke
e könyves ember amibe belefér

Esetlen árnyéka
  mégis minden lap
fölé odavetül.

A nap, a harmadik
  egymás jelenlétébe
kényszerít

(Maga kívül marad)
  bár csak egy-pillanatra
de azért összebékül a másik

Szükségszerű létével
  átnéz
a szomszéd

Fölhevült fiára;
  talán az Isten labdázik
vele a maga örömére.
