MacDiarmid, Hugh: Fény és árnyék (Light and shadow in Hungarian)

Portre of MacDiarmid, Hugh

Light and shadow (English)

Like memories of what cannot be

Within the reign of memory…

That shake our mortal frames to dust.

                                                Shelley

On every thought I have, the countless shadows fall

Of other thoughts as valid that I cannot have;

Cross-lights of errors, too, impossible to me,

Yet somehow truer than all these thoughts, being with more power aglow.

May I never lose these shadowy glimpses of unknown thoughts

That modify and minify my own, and never fail

To keep some shining sense of the way all thoughts at last

Before life's dawning meaning like the stars at sunrise pale.

Fény és árnyék (Hungarian)

Mint oly emlékek, amiket

az emlék országa kivet...

s romba döntik porhüvelyünk.

                                   Shelley

Minden gondolatomra számtalan másik árnya

hull, mit nem gondolok, szintúgy igaz bár,

s lidércfény tévedések – idegenek nekem,

mégis igazabbak e gondolatoknál, erősebb lánggal égők.

Bár sose szűnne e sok gondolat-árny az enyémet

átjárni, körbefonni. Biztatva, ők a jel;

egykor, ha majd a Létnek fényes értelme virrad,

mind e sok gondolat mint csillag halványul el.
