Melville, Herman: A Művészet (Art in Hungarian)

Portre of Melville, Herman

Art (English)

In placid hours well-pleased we dream
Of many a brave unbodied scheme.
But form to lend, pulsed life create,
What unlike things must meet and mate:
A flame to melt – a wind to freeze;
Sad patience – joyous energies;
Humility – yet pride and scorn;
Instinct and study; love and hate;
Audacity – reverence. These must mate,
And fuse with Jacob’s mystic heart,
To wrestle with the angel – Art.

A Művészet (Hungarian)

Sok tervről álmodunk, sok bátor, testtelen
Terv az, mi nyugodt óráinkban megjelen.
Azonban, hogy lüktető életet teremtsünk,
Mi mindennek kell lennie egyszerre együtt!
Olvasztó vadláng és fagyasztó szél s vihar,
Szomorú türelem, víg-lendületű kar,
Alázat, de azért büszkeség, megvetés,
Ösztön és sok tudás, szeretet, gyűlölet,
Lenézés, hódolat. S ha megvannak ezek,
Mindezekhez még Jákob szíve kell legalább,
Hogy legyőzhessük a Művészet angyalát.
