Poe, Edgar Allan: Elizabeth (Elizabeth in Hungarian)

Portre of Poe, Edgar Allan

Elizabeth (English)

Elizabeth, it surely is most fit
[Logic and common usage so commanding]
In thy own book that first thy name be writ,
Zeno and other sages notwithstanding;
And I have other reasons for so doing
Besides my innate love of contradiction;
Each poet - if a poet - in pursuing
The muses thro' their bowers of Truth or Fiction,
Has studied very little of his part,
Read nothing, written less - in short's a fool
Endued with neither soul, nor sense, nor art,
Being ignorant of one important rule,
Employed in even the theses of the school-
Called - I forget the heathenish Greek name
[Called anything, its meaning is the same]
"Always write first things uppermost in the heart."

Elizabeth (Hungarian)

E helyt legillőbb, szép Elizabeth
(Logikus és szokás is az efféle):
Itt, könyved élén a saját neved,
Zenónnak s más bölcseknek ellenére.[1]
Azonban még van más okom is, mint e
Bennem fakadt ellentmondó dacosság.
Ez: hogy költő - ha költő - bár kövesse
Tények s álmok bozótján át a múzsát,
Hivatását rosszul értette meg,
Rest írni és nem olvas - ostoba,
Eszét, lelkét, művét keresheted
Bármerre, hogyha nem hallott soha
Egy törvényt, mit belénk az iskola
Cseppent - mi is fennkölt görög neve? -
(Csak hívd akárhogy, fő a lényege):
"A szív kincsét az első helyre tedd."

[1] Zénónak, azaz Zenónnak tulajdonított híres mondás: "Az ember neve nem jelenhet meg saját művében."
