Poe, Edgar Allan: Eulália (Eulalie in Hungarian)

Portre of Poe, Edgar Allan
Portre of Kosztolányi Dezső

Back to the translator

Eulalie (English)

I dwelt alone
In a world of moan,
And my soul was a stagnant tide,
Till the fair and gentle Eulalie became my blushing bride-
Till the yellow-haired young Eulalie became my smiling bride.

Ah, less- less bright
The stars of the night
Than the eyes of the radiant girl!
That the vapor can make
With the moon-tints of purple and pearl,
Can vie with the modest Eulalie's most unregarded curl-
Can compare with the bright-eyed Eulalie's most humble and careless
curl.

Now Doubt- now Pain
Come never again,
For her soul gives me sigh for sigh,
And all day long
Shines, bright and strong,
Astarte within the sky,
While ever to her dear Eulalie upturns her matron eye-
While ever to her young Eulalie upturns her violet eye.

Eulália (Hungarian)

        A sóhajország árnyán
        Laktam egyedül, árván,
Lelkem mocsár volt, mély magány,
S az angyali jó Eulália lett remegő arám,
A sárgahajú Eulália lett mosolyos arám.

        Ó - a szeme ég,
        Mint éjjel az ég,
Ha csillag rakja ki a nagy űrt!
        S a lágy pihe-gyöngy,
        A bíbor, a gyöngy,
Mit holdsugár ragyogása szűrt,
Nem oly aranyospuha, mint Eulália fürtje, a sárga fürt,
Nem oly sugaraspici, mint Eulália fürtje, a drága fürt.

        A bánat - a mult
        A semmibe hullt,
Mióta angyali lelke véd;
        Az ég aranyán
        Ég a halavány
Astarte s már az éj se setét,
Ha rám veti jó Eulália felragyogó szemét,
Ha rám veti szent Eulália lágy ibolyaszemét.
