Poe, Edgar Allan: A kísértetes palota (The Haunted Palace in Hungarian)

Portre of Poe, Edgar Allan
Portre of Babits Mihály

Back to the translator

The Haunted Palace (English)

In the greenest of our valleys
By good angels tenanted,
Once a fair and stately palace-
Radiant palace-reared its head.
In the monarch Thought's dominion-
It stood there!
Never seraph spread a pinion
Over fabric half so fair!

Banners yellow, glorious, golden,
On its roof did float and flow,
(This-all this-was in the olden
Time long ago,)
And every gentle air that dallied,
In that sweet day,
Along the ramparts plumed and pallid,
A winged odor went away.

Wanderers in that happy valley,
Through two luminous windows, saw
Spirits moving musically,
To a lute's well-tuned law,
Round about a throne where, sitting
(Porphyrogene!)
In state his glory well-befitting,
The ruler of the realm was seen.

And all with pearl and ruby glowing
Was the fair palace door,
Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing,
And sparkling evermore,
A troop of Echoes, whose sweet duty
Was but to sing,
In voices of surpassing beauty,
The wit and wisdom of their king.

But evil things, in robes of sorrow,
Assailed the monarch's high estate.
(Ah, let us mourn!-for never morrow
Shall dawn upon him desolate!)
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
Is but a dim-remembered story
Of the old time entombed.

And travellers, now, within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows see
Vast forms, that move fantastically
To a discordant melody,
While, like a ghastly rapid river,
Through the pale door
A hideous throng rush out forever
And laugh-but smile no more.

A kísértetes palota (Hungarian)

Legzöldebb völgyünk ölében
- Jó angyalok laktak ott -
Hajdan büszkén, büszke-szépen
Drága kastély ragyogott.
Földjén Gondolat királynak
Fölszökött!
Sohse lengtek szeráf-szárnyak
Gyönyörűbb torony fölött.

Ormain zászlók lobogtak,
Sárga, gőgös, víg-arany,
Mindez rég volt - tűnt koroknak
Távolaiban!
Ahány enyelgő játszi szellő
Ment arra át,
A dús, bokrétás bástya mellől
Mint szárnyas illat szállt tovább!

Lantzenére ott a vándor,
Ki e boldog völgybe jött,
Láthatta, hogy szellem táncol
A lángablakok mögött
Egy trón előtt, amelyen ülvén
Bíborbanszületett[1]
Királyuk trónolt, ki körül fény
Árasztott méltó ünnepet.

És gyönggyel a kastély kapúja
S rubinnal rakva volt,
Melyen át egyre s egyre s újra
Édes visszhangok árja folyt
Szikrázva a terembe: - rájuk
Egy munka várt,
S egy öröm: örökké királyuk
Eszét zengni, a bölcs királyt.

De bú-ruhás átkok sereggel
Szállták meg a király honát:
Sirassuk őt! mert soha reggel
Nem süt már éjszakáin át!
S háza körül a halk dicsőség
Ma már csak oly-
Mód zengi őt, mint rege hősét,
Kit elhantolt a kor.

S csak rémes árnyak bálja, mellyet
A véres ablakokon át
Ma itt disszonáns zene mellett
Az utas kavarogni lát,
A sápadt ajtóból ma rémek
Folyója foly
Örökké, s hova azok érnek,
Van kacagás - de nincs mosoly.

[1] Porphürogenétosz; VII. Konsztantinosz bizánci császár, aki születése pillanatától haláláig császár volt, neve születése körülményeire utal.
A ballada Az Usher-ház vége című elbeszélésben található, mint a házigazda alkotása.
