Poe, Edgar Allan: M-nek (To M—— in Hungarian)

Portre of Poe, Edgar Allan
Portre of Tandori Dezső

Back to the translator

To M—— (English)

O! I care not that my earthly lot

Hath little of Earth in it,

That years of love have been forgot

In the fever of a minute:

I heed not that the desolate

      Are happier, sweet, than I,

But that you meddle with my fate

      Who am a passerby.

It is not that my founts of bliss

      Are gushing- strange! with tears-

Or that the thrill of a single kiss

      Hath palsied many years-

'Tis not that the flowers of twenty springs

Which have wither'd as they rose

Lie dead on my heart-strings

With the weight of an age of snows.

Not that the grass- O! may it thrive!

On my grave is growing or grown-

But that, while I am dead yet alive

      I cannot be, lady, alone.

M-nek (Hungarian)

Ó! Földi sorsom nem bánom -

    S ha bármi föld-csekélyén!

Hogy volt évről-évre múláson,

    Bár egy szál perc hevélyén.

Mit, gyötrelemre? Az elveszett

    Ha boldogabb magamnál:

Sorsom összevegyült vele,

    Bár mint múlt alak jár!

Nem az, hogy áldás forrása

    Éltemnek árad könnyel;

Vagy hogy egyetlen csók, vágyra,

    Keltett sok év-özönnel:

Nem az ez. hogy húsz tavasz-virulat,

    Ahogy azonnal fonnyadt,

Havat hintene, súlyosat,

    Hogy a húrok a szíven: holtak -

Sem az, hogy a fű - nőjön, múljon,

    S ha síromon, mit sírjak?

De hogy az élet: eleven holtom,

    Hölgyem, ilyet kibírjak?
