Shelley, Percy Bysshe: Obraz ženy (On a painted woman in Czech)

Portre of Shelley, Percy Bysshe
Portre of Pinkava , Václav Z. J.

Back to the translator

On a painted woman (English)

To youths, who hurry thus away,
How silly your desire is
At such an early hour to pay
Your compliments to Iris.
Stop, prithee, stop, ye hasty beaux,
No longer urge, this race on;
Though Iris has put on her clothes,
She has not put her face on.

Painted woman = kifestett nő, mégpedig olyan feltűnő módon kifestve, hogy lesír róla: lenge erkölcsű nőszemély ő:

"painted woman

n
old-fashioned derogatory a woman whose
appearance suggests she is promiscuous"
(Collins English Dictionary)

"pay compliment

pay someone compliment

Fig. to give someone a compliment"
(McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American
Idioms and Phrasal Verbs)

Obraz ženy (Czech)

Mladíci co se ženete,
ctižádostivě směšní,
že po ránu si přejete
Iris poctami zvěčnit.
Stop, zastav, zbrklý galáne
nedělej stejné chyby;
Iris už má šat na sobě,
obličej ještě chybí.
