Sweeney, Matthew: Pink Milk

Portre of Sweeney, Matthew

Pink Milk (English)

When the goats ate the red carnations
and the next morning's milk was pink,
the abbot love it, demanded more

but the monks loved their flower-garden
and turned to cochineal, to crushed ants,
to paprika, all stirred in milk

to no avail - the perfume was gone
and the abbot grumpy, so carnations
were sacrificed to rampant goats

whose beards jigged as they chewed,
who looked up at the watching monks
while the abbot watched from a window

and in the kitchen, a leg of pork
thawed on a hook from the ceiling,
and blood dripped into a milk-jug.

Rózsaszín tej (Hungarian)

Amikor a kecskék lelegelték a rózsát
és másnap reggel rózsaszín volt a tej,
az apát imádta, többet követelt,

ám a barátok imádták a kertet,
inkább bíborkaktuszt, apróra tört hangyát,
piros paprikát kevertek a tejbe –

hasztalanul – az illat odalett,
az apát zsörtölõdött, így a rózsát
a tülekedõ kecskék elé szórták.

Rágtak a kecskék, reszketõ szakállal
nézték a bámuló barátokat
míg az apát egy ablakból figyelt

és a konyhában kampóra
akasztva disznócsülök olvadt
és vér csöpögött a tejeskancsóba.
