Synge, John Millington: Egy szigeten (On an island in Hungarian)

Portre of Synge, John Millington

Back to the translator

On an island (English)

You've plucked a curlew, drawn a hen.

Washed the shirts of seven men,

You Ve stuffed my pillow, stretched the sheet,

And filled the pan to wash your feet,

YouVe cooped the pullets, wound the clock.

And rinsed the young men's drinking crock;

And now we'll dance to jigs and reels.

Nailed boots chasing girls' naked heels,

Until your father start to snore,

And Jude, now you're married, will stretch on the floor.

Egy szigeten (Hungarian)

Csirkét belezel, póling-madarat,

hét férfi ingét mosod ki magad,

már duzzad a párna, lepedőm leteszed,

löttyentsz lábat mosni vizet,

felhúzod az órát, zárva az ól,

a fiuk után pár poharat kimosol;

most járjuk a dzsigget – a csizma pucér

puha bőrre tapod, lánysarkakat ér –,

míg meg nem hallod horkolni apádat,

asszony vagy, Jude, a padlat az ágyad.
