The Preface (detail) (English)

Upon what base was fixed the lath wherein
He turned this globe, and riggalled it so trim?
Who blew the bellows of His furnace vast?
Or held the mold wherein the world was cast?
Who laid its corner stone? Or whose command?
Where stand the pillars upon which it stands?
Who laced and filleted the earth so fine,
With rivers like green ribbons smaragdine?
Who made the seas its selvage, and it locks
Like a quilt ball within a silver box?
Who spread its canopy? Or curtains spun?
Who in this bowling alley bowled the sun?

riggalled; formed, grooved
filleted; decorated
smaragdine; green, the color of emerald
selvage; a woven hem which prevents a fabric from unravelling locks; looks

Az előszó (részlet) (Hungarian)

Min állt az Ő esztergája, melyen
a Földet csiszolta, hogy szép legyen?
Ki izzította a roppant Kohót,
s kié a Minta, hol világa forrt?
Sarkköve hol van? S ki rakta oda?
És hol áll szilárd tartóoszlopa?
S ki parancsolta, hogy a Földgolyót
díszítsék smaragd-szalagként folyók?
A tengert fövennyel ki zárta be,
mint labdát ezüstláda mélyibe?
S függönyt ki szőtt? Baldachint ki adott?
E tekepályán ki gurít Napot?

A ’God's Determination’ előszavából.
