Teasdale, Sara: Minden halandó pernyévé esik ([All that was mortal] in Hungarian)

Portre of Teasdale, Sara
Portre of Tímár György

Back to the translator

[All that was mortal] (English)

All that was mortal shall be burned away,
  All that was mind shall have been put to sleep.
Only the spirit shall awake to say
  What the deep says to the deep;

But for an instance, for it too is fleeting –
  As on a field with new snow everywhere,
Footprints of birds record a brief alighting
  In flight begun and ended in the air.

Minden halandó pernyévé esik (Hungarian)

Minden halandó pernyévé esik,
  Mindent, mi eszme, elborít az éj,
Csak a szellem ébred, hogy mondja, mit
  A mélynek mond el a mély;

Mégis, egy percre - hisz elröppen ő is,
  Mint rétről, mit az új hó betakart -
 A madárnyom egy villanást megőriz,
  Mely szárnyban indult és a légbe halt.
