Thomas, R. S.: A Tánc (The Dance in Hungarian)

Portre of Thomas, R. S.
Portre of Petrőczi Éva

The Dance (English)

She is young. Have I the right

Even to name her? Child,

It is not love I offer

Your Quick limbs, your eyes;

Only the barren homage

Of an old man whom time

Crucifies. Take my hand

A moment in the dance,

Ignoring its sly pressure,

The dry rot of age,

And lead me under the boughs

Of innocence. Let me smell

My youth again in your hair.

A Tánc (Hungarian)

Olyan ifjú. Vajon jogomban

Áll kimondani nevét? Gyermek,

Nem szerelmet ajánlok

Sebes lépteidnek, szemednek:

Csupán egy öregember

Kopár hódolatát, akit az idő

Feszít keresztre. Fogd meg kezem

A tánc egy pillanatában,

Feledve lagymatag fogását,

A kor megannyi száraz nyomát,

S vezess az ártatlanság

Virágzó gallyai alá. Hadd szimatoljam

Hajadból ismét az ifjúságot.
