Tomlinson, Charles: Acél – az éjjeli műszak (Steel – the night shift in Hungarian)

Steel – the night shift (English)

Slung the gantries cranes
patrol in air and parry
lights the furnaces fling up at them.
Clamour is deepest in the den beneath,
fire fiercest at the frontier where
an arm of water doubles
and disjoint it. There is a principle, a pulse
in all these molten and metallic contraries,
this sweat unseen. For men
facelessly habituated to the glare
outstare it, guide the girders
from their high and iron balconies
and keep the simmering slag-trucks
feeding heap on heap
in regular, successive, sea-on-shore
concussive bursts of dry
and falling sound. And time
is all this measured voice would seem
to ask, until it uncreate
the height and fabric of the light-
lunged, restive, flame-eroded night.

Acél – az éjjeli műszak (Hungarian)

A portáldaruk lecsüngő
horgai légi járőrök, vívnak a
kemencékből feldobott fényekkel.
A zengés a katlanban lent a legmélyebb,
a tűz legbőszebb a határvonalon, hol
vízsugár kettőzi meg és
osztja kétfele. Valami elv, valami lüktetés
hatja át e fémes, olvadt ellentéteket,
e láthatatlan verítéket. Mert az izzást
arctalanul megszokott férfiak
állják szemmel, vezérlik az acél-
hidakat a magasból, fülkéjükből,
és rakják tele a fortyogó salak-csilléket
egyre-másra, szabályos,
folyamatos, tenger-hullámzású,
agyrengető, szárazon zuhogó
hang-kötegekben. És úgy rémlik,
ez az ütemes hang csakis az időt
faggatja, amíg a fény-tüdejű,
csökönyös, fém-korhasztotta éj
magasló vázát ízekre nem szedi.
