Walcott, Derek: Nyár dereka, Tobago (Midsummer, Tobago in Hungarian)

Portre of Walcott, Derek
Portre of Dabi István

Back to the translator

Midsummer, Tobago (English)

Broad sun-stoned beaches.

White heat.
A green river.

A bridge,
scorched yellow palms

from the summer-sleeping house
drowsing through August.

Days I have held,
days I have lost,

days that outgrow, like daughters,
my harbouring arms.

Nyár dereka, Tobago (Hungarian)

Nap - kövezte széles strandok

Fehér hőség.
Zöld folyó.

Híd,
megperzselődött sárga pálmafák,

a nyári álmát alvó házból
elszenderítő augusztusi fuvallat.

Napok, amiket megtartottam,
napok, amiket elvesztettem,

napok, amik mint a lányaim, kinőttek
menedéket adó karjaim közül.
