Waller, Edmund: Egy övre (On a Girdle in Hungarian)

Portre of Waller, Edmund
Portre of Szabó Lőrinc

Back to the translator

On a Girdle (English)

That which her slender waist confined

Shall now my joyful temples bind;

No monarch but would give his crown

His arms might do what this has done.

It was my Heaven's extremest sphere,

The pale which held that lovely deer:

My joy, my grief, my hope, my love,

Did all within this circle move.

A narrow compass! and yet there

Dwelt all that 's good, and all that 's fair!

Give me but what this ribband bound,

Take all the rest the sun goes round!

Egy övre (Hungarian)

Ami őt ölelte, a pánt

most homlokomat fogja át;

s tehetné csak, mit karom, a

király trónját adná oda!

Mennyem szélső szférája volt,

mi szép gímem zárkája volt;

kínom, üdvöm, vágyam, szivem

e körben mozgott szüntelen.

Szűk öv csak! Mégis benne élt,

mind, ami jó, mind, ami szép!

Több, amit zárt e kis szalag,

mint amit körüljár a Nap!
