Williams, Hugo: Just Another Day

Portre of Williams, Hugo

Just Another Day (English)

When you were young
you came downstairs in the middle of the night
and saw the living room.
The furniture lay about your feet.
The carpet had been folded back
where it met the skirting board.

You opened the front door
and stood for a moment on the step.
Little pieces of metal
shone in the asphalt on the road.
The chimneys were pot-bellied apostles
preaching to the stars.

You cleared your throat, or coughed,
and the dawn chorus started up –
excited by an item of news
which might have been you,
or might have been just another day.
You stood there for a moment, listening.

Csak a másnap (Hungarian)

Amikor fiatal voltál,
lejöttél éjnek évadján a lépcsőn,
és megláttad a nappalit.
A berendezés lábadnál hevert.
A szőnyeget visszahajtották,
ahol a szegélyléc kezdődött.

Kinyitottad a bejárati ajtót,
és egy percre megálltál a lépcsőn.
Kis fémdarabok
fénylettek az aszfaltban az úton.
A kémények, pókhasú apostolok,
imádkoztak a csillagokhoz.

Torkodat köszörülted vagy köhögtél,
és rázendített a hajnali kórus -
felizgatta valami újság,
ami lehettél te is,
vagy lehetett épp csak a másnap.
Megálltál ott egy percre és füleltél.
