Williams, William Carlos: Őserdő (The Jungle in Hungarian)

Portre of Williams, William Carlos
Portre of Kodolányi Gyula

Back to the translator

The Jungle (English)

It is not the still weight
of the trees, the
breathless interior of the wood,
tangled with wrist-thick

vines, the flies, reptiles,
the forever fearful monkeys
screaming and running
in the branches –

                               but
a girl waiting
shy, brown, soft-eyed –
to guide you
                       Upstairs, sir.

Őserdő (Hungarian)

Nem fák
nesztelen súlya vár rád,
nem erdő fülledt belseje,
karvastag indák

sűrűjével, legyekkel, hüllőkkel,
rikoltozó, ágakon csörtető,
mindig félelmes
majmokkal -

                       csak
egy lány, félénken, barnán,
lágy pillantással,
hogy vezessen -
               Fel a lépcsőn, uram.
